In 2005 the NHS Priority Committees judged that nail infections were not fatal and therefore money could be better spent elsewhere. Existing products that were prescribed also had known side effects associated with the liver.
Consumer research revealed that people felt embarrassed and unhygienic after contracting an infection of the nail bed. Such infections can also look unsightly. This led to the successful launch of ClearZal® BAC into the U.K. and Irish market by Zeon Healthcare.
It was the first OTC product of its kind available. Since 2005 it has gone from strength to strength, and has led to the introduction of an extended range. Several products within the range, including ClearZal® BAC are available in all national pharmacy chains and most independent pharmacies in the U.K.
